Bluebook renewal

Every registered vehicle has its bluebook (सवारी दर्ता किताब) renewed once a year, when its vehicle tax is paid. This is how it goes in general; each province sets its own rules, so your transport office has the final word.

When it is due

Your due date comes from the date your vehicle was registered, not from one date for everyone. The last page of the bluebook carries the date for your vehicle.

A window follows that date in which no late fee applies. After it, a late fee is added on top of the tax, and it grows the longer you wait.

Leaving it for years costs more than money: the registration can be cancelled, and the vehicle can be impounded.

What to bring

How it goes

  1. 1Check the due date on the last page of your bluebook, and renew the third-party insurance first if it has run out.
  2. 2Have the pollution test done if your vehicle needs one, and keep the certificate with the file.
  3. 3Go to a transport management office that handles vehicle tax: some offices deal with licenses only.
  4. 4Hand over the bluebook and the papers for checking.
  5. 5Pay the vehicle tax, the renewal fee and any late fee.
  6. 6Collect the bluebook with the renewal recorded in it, and keep the receipt: you will need it next year.

Paying online

Some provinces take the payment through official electronic channels, such as the Nagarik App. Valid third-party insurance has to be on record first, or the payment will not go through.

Whether you still have to visit an office afterwards differs by province and has been changing, so ask your transport office before you rely on it.

Common questions

When is my bluebook renewal due?
On the date on the last page of your bluebook, which comes from the day the vehicle was registered. A window follows it in which no late fee applies.
Can I renew my bluebook online?
In some provinces you can pay through official channels such as the Nagarik App once valid insurance is on record. Ask your transport office whether you still need to visit.
What happens if I renew late?
A late fee is added on top of the tax, and it grows the longer you wait. After years unpaid, the registration can be cancelled and the vehicle impounded.
Is insurance part of the renewal?
No. Third-party insurance is bought from an insurer, not the transport office. It is a legal requirement, and it has to be valid before you renew.
I bought a used vehicle. Is renewing enough?
No. A change of owner needs an ownership transfer (नामसारी), which is separate from the yearly renewal.
